BMB Summary

As with 23 things, there were many new and useful items that were introduced to us.  Sometimes, I felt as though there was too much information given at once making it more difficult to absorb.  It also was difficult to accomplish all the items for some of the weeks.  I do feel proud of the fact that I was able to accomplish the entire 9 week program while being on a part-time schedule.  The various genres introduced as well as the teen information was quite useful.

Week 9-Assignment 2

I have read both articles and watched numerous trailers from the articles as well as on You Tube.  I found some of the trailers to be intriguing, making me want to read the book, and others rather confusing.  Needless to say, those did not want to make me read the book.  Trailers are not the first thing I would look for when selecting a book to read.  I enjoyed the trailers from the authors perspective more so than the general trailers.

I don't think I'd find the trailers useful for Readers Advisory as I would have to be more familiar with a book before looking for a trailer.

Week 8-Assignment 4

I went into some detail in Assignment 3, but let's see if I can be a little more detailed on two of my titles.

In the Travel genre, I selected "Eat, Pray, Love".  This is the touching story of one woman's journey to find peace within herself by embarking on a journey to three countries, Italy, India and Indonesia.  In each country, she met new friends and had new experiences that led to her "finding" herself.  Each country enriched her as a person and taught her new things about herself.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about foreign countries as well as those persons who look forward to enriching themselves through the experiences of others.

In the food genre, I selected "French Women Don't Get Fat".  This humorous book tells the story of the author, Mireille Guiliano, an authentic French woman.  It describes how French women eat pretty much whatever they want, and never get fat.  Portion control is a big factor in not gaining weight.  It also helps to eat whatever you want.  Her book includes recipes for some of her favorite dishes.  Exercise is also a component of the French women not gaining weight.

All in all, I would recommend this book to anyone who loves reading food based fiction.  It's not a true mystery type of reading, but I enjoyed reading the book as well as food based mysteries.

Week 8-Assignment 3

Of the 16 genres mentioned, I selected Memoirs, Food, Travel and Adventure.

Memoirs can be found in various areas of the collection.  Some can be found in Biographies, 900's for memoirs of World War II, and the 800's.  There are memoirs also throughout various areas of the collection, but not in significant enough numbers to list here. A memoir that might be enjoyed by a fiction reader is  "Lizz Free or Die: essays" by Lizz Winstead.  The book describes how humor became a powerful weapon in confronting life's challenges.  The book can be found at the call number 818W.

Food can be found in many places, but the primary area is the 600's. That is the section where cookbooks and authors relating their experience with food and interspersing recipes. There are books about food production, the use of food in diets, food allergies, and recipes.    I am not a mystery reader, but love Diane Mott Davidson's mysteries about Goldie and her food escapades.  A book I enjoyed that was "French Women Don't Get Fat" by Mireille Guiliano.  The call number for this book is 613.25G.  She has also written other books on similar subjects.  I think any fiction reader may enjoy this, especially if they have an interest in food.

Travel is a great interest of mine.  I love to go places and discover new things!  Most travel books can be found in the 900's.  I think the book "Eat, Pray, Love: one woman's search for everything across Italy, India and Indonesia" would appeal to fiction readers that enjoy adventure and travel.  The 910 area contains many books that fit into this area.

My final area is Adventure.  I love adventure! Adventure can fit into many areas of the collection, but seems to primarily be in the 796's and 900's again. It can also be classified in the Biography area.  It is closely, but not always associated with Travel as it sometimes requires travel to have an adventure.  One book that is about adventure is "Mountaineers: great tales of bravery and conquest" by Ed Douglas, call number   7960522M. Persons who enjoyed Jeffrey Archer's "Paths of Glory" would enjoy this book as they both involve climbing for survival.

Week 7-Assignment 4

Followed Harper Teen and Tor Teen(Macmillan) for my teen imprints.  I liked the way the Harper Teen site had the tope ten teen authors and top trending books. The Pretty Little Liars series seems to be very popular on the site, but I know it is popular with our teens. Fantasy, Sci Fi, books are also very popular among teens.

TOR  Teens also has reviews of currently and to be released teen books, top sellers, and books with awards and honors.  It has news, authors, podcasts, their imprints, etc.  I was impressed that their books tab allowed the user to select other age level books as well as other genre specific books.

The fantasy/sci fi/paranormal seems to have become very popular among teens.

Week 7-Assignment 3

I have decided to follow Stacked and Teenreads.  Stacked is really interesting.  My first day, and reviewing previous days. A young teen author, Katie Williams was interviewed in a twitterfeed about her new book "Absent."  The previous day, her book had been reviewed.  Found it interesting to read the review, then hear from the author.  In reviewing Stacked today, it is interesting to see the wide variety of books that are discussed as well as subgenres within the YA area.  Definitely a site that I would use for possible RA for teens.

Teenreads gives reviews of newly released teen fiction. Included in the review is the subgenre that the book would fall into.  I like the links to other sites as well as the suggested reading lists, authors, reviews, etc that can be found on this site.

Week 7-Assignment 2

I read the first two articles. New Adult: Needless Marketing-Speak or Valued Subgenre and Who is Buying Teen Books.  The trend seems to be trying to keep Young Adult readers by writing books that cater to the 18-23 year old age group.  The problem with this is that these books could become problematic if they are placed in the Young Adult area as they might contain subject matter more mature than those materials. Classifying them could become a problem.  The young adult area still garners much interest.

I really couldn't post to two colleagues blogs as I had difficulty finding persons who had reached this level of completion.  If I had not been so graciously given time to work on this, as well as working on it in all my free time, I would not have reached this point.
